Building a Better Future for the Construction Industry

CECA comment: Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit speech and infrastructure skills   22nd September 2017

Responding to Theresa May’s speech on Brexit this afternoon, the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) focussed on what the Prime Minister’s proposals may mean for the ability of industry to address skills gaps in the infrastructure sector.

Commenting, CECA director of External Affairs Marie-Claude Hemming said: “Industry can and should look at ways to improve productivity and increase recruitment to close skills gaps.

“If the UK infrastructure sector is to successfully deliver the pipeline of projects that are currently planned, we need to do as much work as we can collaboratively to identify where the skills pinch points are, and to work with Government to ensure that steps are taken to address them in the short to medium term.

“At the same time, we also need to put in place a clear framework for how the post-Brexit migration system will look. The construction sector requires more than 35,000 new workers per year, and currently there are significant numbers of EU construction workers living in the UK who are helping to build the future health of the UK economy.

“We welcome the clarity provided by the Prime Minister’s planned two-year ‘period of implementation’, but there is still much to do to ensure the UK construction workforce is fit to meet demand once the UK has left the European Union.

“As always, industry will be most flexible when it is given adequate notice of any changes that will impact upon it. We look forward to working closely with Government to ensure our industry is able to deliver the projects that will secure post-Brexit economic growth.”
