Building a Better Future for the Construction Industry

CECA: Mixed outlook for UK infrastructure sector over next twelve months   10th August 2017

Civils contractors today welcomed indications that growth in infrastructure workloads has improved, but said that expectations for the next twelve months are mixed.

Results from the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Workload Trends Survey for 2017 Q2 showed that workloads continued to increase across Great Britain in Q2, the sixteenth consecutive quarter of growth since 2013 Q3. Workloads in Scotland declined for a second consecutive quarter, according to 24 per cent of firms, on balance.

Compared to 12 months ago, orders increased on balance according to 3 per cent of British firms. On balance, only 5 per cent of British firms reported that their workloads are expected to increase in the next 12 months. For the first time since 2012 Q4, British firms expected new work orders to be lower in the next 12 months, by a balance of 2 per cent.

Commenting, CECA director of external affairs Marie-Claude Hemming said: “Although our members are reporting growth in workloads and orders, nonetheless there are indications that the sector is not operating at its maximum potential.

“This is far from the full extent to which investment in infrastructure can boost growth in the economy. As the UK enters into negotiations with the EU prior to Brexit, it is vital that the Government does all it can to unlock this potential to boost connectivity, create jobs, and deliver strong economic growth.”
