Building a Better Future for the Construction Industry

CECA: Industry poised to deliver on record rail investment   12th October 2017

Civils contractors today said that the UK’s infrastructure industry is poised to deliver upgrades and drive efficiencies on the rail network now that the Government has unveiled the latest stage of its investment plans for the sector.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling MP has set out the next round of rail funding, announcing that around £48 billion will be spent on the network over a five year period from 2019, with more maintenance and an increased focus on efficiency.

The Government has also announced that it will allocate funds separately for major upgrades by following a new process, to be set out in greater detail later this year.

Commenting, Director of External Affairs for the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Marie-Claude Hemming said: “The announcement of new funding for the UK’s rail network is to be welcomed.

“Our members are poised to deliver on the Government’s ambitious investment programme, which will increase reliability and punctuality for passengers, while delivering value for the UK taxpayer.

“At the same time, the Government must work with industry to ensure that the new funding process for approving major upgrades and enhancements will enable industry to deliver the world-class schemes the UK needs, on time and on budget.”
