Building a Better Future for the Construction Industry

CECA: NIC for Wales must commit to renewables   4th April 2017

Civils contractors today backed calls for the National Infrastructure Commission for Wales to have targets for supporting renewable energy projects and associated infrastructure.

Commenting on today’s publication of an Institute of Welsh Affairs (IWA) report on funding renewable energy projects, director of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (Wales) Ed Evans said: “Renewable energy projects have the potential to massively boost the Welsh economy, as well as help the UK meet its carbon commitments.

“One of the biggest barriers to realising this potential is access to funding. The IWA report sets out a number of new funding models which if implemented will unlock investment in renewables schemes, ensuring adaptability and diversity within the energy market.

“If we are to secure future growth in the Welsh economy, we need a clear strategy of how we are to achieve this by identifying new and emerging growth sectors.

“In order to do so, the National Infrastructure Commission for Wales must implement a strategic approach to all sectors of the economy, including a measurable level of commitment to sustainable energy.

“Investing in renewables gives Wales the opportunity to develop a new and exportable industry that will not only deliver clean energy, but will create jobs and drive economic growth.”
